When farm people got sick during the nineteenth century, there was no docter round the corner who could be called in. This was especially applicable to farmers who lived far outside the boundaries of the Cape Colony. Farm people, therefore, usually relied on home remedies to attend to patients, but some farmers obtained house medicines when they visited the nearest town. This was applicable to the Damfontein Hennings. Since 1858 house-pharmacy medicines from Lennon were available at the Cape of Good Hope and there was always a Lennon-house-pharmacy box available on Damfontein. The same applies to “Huisgeneesmiddel van Dr De Haas” (house remedy of Dr De Haas) and a box Vapo-Cresolene. In course of time a “Complete Snake Bite Outfit” box was added.
